Top Destinations at a Glance

To help you navigate the wealth of options, we've highlighted some of the top attractions in Virginia that consistently captivate our attention:

Best National Parks & Nature: Virginia National Parks Guide

Virginia is a haven for outdoor lovers, boasting a diverse range of natural landscapes, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic coast. Our Virginia national parks guide emphasizes the unparalleled beauty and recreational opportunities found throughout the state. We recommend exploring these natural wonders for an unforgettable experience.

Shenandoah National Park: A crown jewel of the East Coast, Shenandoah National Park encompasses a vast stretch of the Blue Ridge Mountains, bisected by the iconic Skyline Drive. The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, though portions of Skyline Drive may close due to inclement weather. The entrance fee is $30 per vehicle, valid for seven consecutive days, or you can opt for an annual pass. We recommend visiting the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (Mile 4.6) or the Byrd Visitor Center (Mile 51), both typically open from May 1 to November 1, and year-round respectively, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Sun-Thurs) and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Fri-Sat).

Great Falls Park: Just outside Washington D.C., Great Falls Park showcases the Potomac River cascading over a series of dramatic rocks. The park is open daily from 7:00 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, closing only on Christmas Day. The entrance fee for a private vehicle is $20, valid for seven consecutive days. Parking lots can fill quickly on weekends, so we advise arriving early or late in the afternoon.

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park: This historical park, straddling the borders of Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, marks a significant passageway through the Appalachian Mountains. There is no entrance fee to access the park grounds, which are open daily. The visitor center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Guided tours of Gap Cave and Hensley Settlement are available for a fee, with reservations recommended up to one month in advance.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge & Assateague Island National Seashore: Famous for its wild ponies, this coastal refuge offers pristine beaches, birdwatching, and serene natural beauty. While there's no fee for pedestrians or cyclists, a vehicle entrance fee of $25 (valid for 7 days) is required to enter the Assateague Island National Seashore, which also grants access to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The Virginia district of the park closes at certain times depending on the season, with hours ranging from 5 AM to 10 PM in summer to 6 AM to 6 PM in winter.

Cities & Cultural Highlights

Virginia's cities are vibrant hubs of history, art, and modern life. Our team finds that each city offers a distinct flavor, from colonial charm to bustling urban centers.

Colonial Williamsburg: As the world's largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg offers an immersive journey into 18th-century America. We recommend dedicating a full day or more to explore the historic area, interact with costumed interpreters, and witness traditional trades. Admission tickets are required, and various passes are available for single-day or multi-day visits. Hours vary seasonally, so it's best to check their official website for the most current operating schedule.

Mount Vernon: The beloved estate of George Washington, Mount Vernon provides a profound look into the life of America's first president. Visitors can tour the mansion, gardens, and various outbuildings. General admission tickets are required, and we advise purchasing them online in advance, especially during peak season. Mount Vernon typically operates daily, with hours varying by season. For example, from March to October, it's generally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with shorter hours in the winter months.

Monticello: Thomas Jefferson's architectural masterpiece and plantation, Monticello, offers insightful tours into the life and mind of the third U.S. President. We suggest booking a "Highlights of Monticello" tour ticket to see inside the house, as it's the most popular option. Monticello is generally open Tuesday through Sunday and on holiday Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from late May to early November. From early November to early January, it's open Thursday through Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The property closes for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, but is open from December 26 to January 3, 2027. The last entry to the property is 4:00 p.m.

Arlington National Cemetery: This hallowed ground serves as a poignant tribute to those who served the United States. The cemetery is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Interpretive bus tours are available from the Welcome Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., operating 363 days a year. However, the cemetery is closed on December 19, 2026 (Wreaths In Day) and January 9, 2027 (Wreaths Out Day). The Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier occurs every hour on the hour from October 1 to March 31, and every half hour from April 1 to September 30.

Historic Jamestowne & Jamestown Settlement: Explore the site of the first permanent English colony in North America at Historic Jamestowne, an archaeological site. Nearby, Jamestown Settlement offers living history museums with re-created ships, a Powhatan village, and a colonial fort. Both attractions require admission, and combination tickets are often available. Hours vary seasonally, so checking their respective websites for up-to-date information is recommended.

Richmond: The state capital, Richmond, is a city brimming with history, particularly from the Civil War era. We suggest starting your visit at the Richmond National Battlefield Park's Civil War Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works, which is free to enter and features exhibits and films. Park grounds and trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Cold Harbor Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while the Fort Harrison Visitor Center is closed for 2026. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture are also must-visits for art and history enthusiasts. Don't miss the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. Admission to the Poe Museum is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and military, and $6 for youth (7-17). The museum is closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

Old Town Alexandria: This charming historic district offers cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and a lively waterfront. Metered street parking is available, and several parking garages exist, with many offering rates as low as $5 a day or maximums after 5 p.m. and on weekends. Metered parking is free on Sundays and state holidays. However, the Market Square Garage will close on February 9, 2026, for renovations, so alternative parking options should be considered.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center: Part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, this massive facility near Dulles Airport houses iconic aircraft and spacecraft, including the Space Shuttle Discovery. Admission is free, but parking costs $15 per vehicle before 4:00 p.m., after which it's free. The center is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except on December 25. Timed-entry passes are required and can be reserved online, with passes for ISDC 2026 visits becoming available on April 1, 2026.

Coastal & Scenic Spots

Virginia's coastline and scenic byways offer a different kind of adventure, from bustling beaches to tranquil islands and breathtaking mountain drives.

Virginia Beach Boardwalk: This iconic 3-mile boardwalk is a hub of activity, offering access to sandy beaches, restaurants, and entertainment. Municipal parking lots are available near the boardwalk on Atlantic Avenue, with daily parking fees typically charged from April 1 to October 31, with a maximum daily rate of $20. Beginning in 2026, parking rates have been adjusted to a progressive, cumulative structure. Virginia Beach residents can apply for a $50 annual parking voucher, which launched on April 1, 2026. Overnight parking for non-oversized vehicles is only available in municipal parking garages. We recommend checking the city's official municipal parking map and planning your route in advance to avoid congestion.

Blue Ridge Parkway: A designated All-American Road, the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through the Appalachian Mountains, offering stunning scenic overlooks and access to numerous hiking trails. While the parkway itself is generally open year-round, sections are subject to temporary closures due to weather conditions, road construction, and maintenance projects. For example, in 2026, there are ongoing projects for bridge rehabilitation near James River (MP 63.5-63.9) and pavement reconstruction near Bedford/Peaks of Otter (MP 86-89), which may involve full closures and detours. We advise checking the National Park Service's Road Status and Closures page before your trip for the latest updates.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge & Assateague Island National Seashore: Shared with Maryland, Virginia's portion of Assateague Island is a beautiful destination for wildlife viewing, especially the wild ponies. The refuge is open daily, with hours varying seasonally: May through September (5:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.), April and October (6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.), and November through mid-March (6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.). There is no fee for pedestrians or cyclists, but a vehicle entrance fee of $25 (valid for 7 days) is required. An annual pass for the Assateague Island National Seashore is $45 and is valid in both the Maryland and Virginia districts.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel: An engineering marvel, this 23-mile-long bridge and tunnel system connects Virginia's Eastern Shore with the mainland. Tolls are collected, with peak season pricing effective Fridays through Sundays, from May 15 to September 13, 2026. All discounts require an E-ZPass. For Class 1 vehicles (cars, pickups, motorcycles), the off-peak toll is $16.00 and the peak season toll is $21.00 for an initial crossing. A return trip within 24 hours with an E-ZPass is $6.00 off-peak and $1.00 peak season. We recommend checking the official CBBT website for the most current toll schedule.

False Cape State Park: For a truly secluded natural experience, False Cape State Park offers undeveloped beaches and primitive camping. There is no state park entrance fee for False Cape itself. However, there is no vehicular access directly into the park; visitors must access it by foot, bicycle, or boat through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which has a separate $5 per car entrance fee. Camping reservations must be made by phone, as same-day online reservations are not available. Pets are allowed at False Cape but not through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge unless brought by boat or through North Carolina entrances.

Cape Henry Lighthouse: Located at Fort Story in Virginia Beach, this historic lighthouse was the first federally funded public works project of the United States. The lighthouse is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and January 2 and 3. General admission is $22, with discounts for AAA members, seniors (60+), military, and students. All visitors aged 18 or older without base access must complete and submit SECNAV Form 5512 to gain entry to the Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story.

Colonial Beach: A charming riverside town on the Potomac, Colonial Beach offers sandy shores and a relaxed atmosphere. Parking fees apply from April 1 to September 30. Zone 1 (Business District) costs $2 per hour or $20 daily, while Zone 2 (Beach District) costs $3 per hour or $25 daily. Oversized vehicles or those with trailers must park in designated spots at the Castlewood parking lot for a flat fee of $35 per day. Handicap parking and parking for veterans with valid Purple Heart license plates are free.

Tangier Island: This unique, remote island in the Chesapeake Bay offers a glimpse into a traditional watermen's community. Ferries depart from Crisfield, Maryland, and Reedville, Virginia, seasonally. The ferry from Crisfield, MD, typically runs daily from May 15 to October 15, departing at 12:30 p.m. and returning from Tangier at 4:00 p.m. Round-trip tickets for 2026 are $35 for adults. The ferry from Reedville, VA, operates May through October, departing at 10:00 a.m. and returning at 2:15 p.m. We recommend checking with Tangier Island Cruises or other ferry operators for the most current schedules and pricing, as trips can be canceled due to weather or low participation.

Best Time to Visit

Determining the best time to visit Virginia depends largely on your interests. We find that each season offers distinct advantages.

  • Spring (April-May): Mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and fewer crowds make spring ideal for exploring historical sites, gardens like the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and enjoying scenic drives.
  • Summer (June-August): Perfect for beach vacations in Virginia Beach and water activities at Smith Mountain Lake. Expect warmer temperatures and larger crowds, especially at popular coastal destinations and theme parks like Busch Gardens Williamsburg.
  • Fall (September-October): Our team's top recommendation for scenic beauty, particularly along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive, as the foliage transforms into a spectacular array of colors. The weather is crisp and pleasant for hiking.
  • Winter (November-March): While some outdoor attractions may have reduced hours or closures, winter offers a quieter experience at historical sites and museums. Enjoy holiday events in colonial towns or cozy up in a mountain cabin.

A Virginia road trip itinerary can be tailored to many interests. Here’s a sample 7-day Virginia road trip itinerary focusing on history, nature, and coastal charm:

Practical Travel Tips

Our team has compiled some essential tips to help you make the most of your Virginia adventure:

  • Transportation: While major cities are well-connected by interstates, a car is essential for exploring rural areas, national parks, and scenic drives like the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • Accommodations: Virginia offers a wide range of lodging, from historic inns and boutique hotels in Old Town Alexandria and Staunton to charming bed and breakfasts in Lexington and modern resorts in Virginia Beach. Camping is also popular in state and national parks.
  • Reservations: For popular attractions, especially during peak season or holidays, we strongly advise making reservations for tours, accommodations, and even some restaurants well in advance. This is particularly true for guided tours at places like Monticello and Mount Vernon.
  • Weather Preparedness: Virginia experiences four distinct seasons. Pack layers, especially if visiting in spring or fall. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters can bring cold temperatures and occasional snow in the mountains.
  • Official Resources: For the most up-to-date information on events, closures, and specific travel advisories, we always recommend consulting the official Virginia Is For Lovers tourism website and individual attraction websites.

Hidden Gems & Local Favorites

Beyond the well-trodden paths, Virginia holds a treasure trove of lesser-known spots that our team believes offer unique and authentic experiences. Discovering these Virginia hidden gems can add a special touch to your trip.

  • Tangier Island: A remote island in the Chesapeake Bay, accessible by ferry, where golf carts are the primary mode of transport. It offers a unique glimpse into a traditional watermen's community and a peaceful escape from the mainland.
  • Breaks Interstate Park: Known as the "Grand Canyon of the South," this park on the Virginia-Kentucky border features the largest canyon east of the Mississippi River. It's a spectacular destination for hiking, whitewater rafting, and stunning overlooks.
  • Grayson Highlands State Park: Located in the southwestern mountains, this park is famous for its wild ponies, alpine-like bald plateaus, and access to the Appalachian Trail. It's a fantastic spot for hiking and experiencing unique high-country scenery.
  • Natural Bridge State Park: While the Natural Bridge itself is a well-known geological wonder, the surrounding state park offers beautiful trails and a less crowded experience than some other major attractions.
  • Oatlands Historic House and Gardens: Near Leesburg, this preserved plantation and its elaborate gardens provide a serene and elegant step back in time, often hosting events and offering a more intimate historical experience than larger estates.
  • Maymont: In Richmond, this 100-acre Victorian estate features a historic mansion, elaborate gardens (Japanese and Italian), a wildlife exhibit, and a children's farm. It's a delightful urban oasis and one of our favorite Virginia hidden gems.
  • Smith Mountain Lake: Virginia's second-largest freshwater lake, offering over 500 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, swimming, and watersports. It's a popular local getaway with a relaxed atmosphere.

Best time to visit Virginia
The best time to visit Virginia depends on your interests. Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) are ideal for mild weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant natural beauty, especially for scenic drives and historical sites. Summer (June-August) is perfect for beach vacations and water activities, while winter (November-March) offers a quieter experience at indoor attractions and holiday events, with potential for snow in the mountains.
Virginia in winter
Virginia in winter offers a quieter, often magical, experience. Historical sites like Colonial Williamsburg and Mount Vernon are less crowded and often feature special holiday programming. Mountain areas like Shenandoah National Park may have limited road access due to snow, but offer opportunities for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on accessible trails. Coastal areas like Virginia Beach are peaceful for strolls. Many museums and indoor attractions remain open, providing cultural enrichment.
